DuPage County: a complete guide to 50 county government services

If you are like most people, your only personal experience with DuPage County government has been paying taxes, or a traffic ticket. Or perhaps you’ve needed a building permit or you’ve been in small claims court. What is “DuPage County” and what can it do for you? In fact, the county is a very interesting and important segment of government, with a scope of services that you may find surprising.

According to Wikipedia, “Counties were among the earliest units of local government established in the original Thirteen Colonies. In the United States, a county is a local level of government below the state (or federal territory). Counties are used in 48 of the 50 states, while Louisiana is divided into parishes and Alaska into boroughs. The U.S. Census Bureau lists 3,140 counties or county-equivalent administrative units in total.”

One of the best ways to understand the scope of power, responsibilities and jurisdiction of the DuPage County Government is to understand the breadth of services provided. This is especially important now with the disastrous flooding that has devestated parts of DuPage County this year.
